The dong did not immediately begin to spread throughout Vietnam at the same time. In 1946 the dong was introduced in North Vietnam to replace the piastre of French Indochina. In 1975 September 22 the government of South Vietnam made a decision to replace the piastre with a new dong. In 1978 May 3 the Vietnamese dong has become the national currency throughout Vietnam.
In 2003 the Vietnamese government abandoned paper banknotes and started printing polymer banknotes.
Currently, there are 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, 100,000, 200,000 and 500,000 VND banknotes in circulation.
