Since 1841-1941 Hong Kong was a British colony (from 1941 to 1997 a British overseas territory), the United Kingdom tried to implement a system based on pounds. The plan did not work because the people of Hong Kong did not want to use it, so in 1860 the Hong Kong Mint was established and the Hong Kong dollar was introduced. After the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong in World War II, the dollar was replaced by the Japanese yen, but after the war the Hong Kong dollar became Hong Kong’s national currency again. In 1972, Hong Kong’s currency was pegged to the US dollar.
